THE CHARACTERS

The Dancer

Clare Eliason, a dancer, lands the lead in Swan Lake, a role she has always coveted. But as her dreams all seem to be coming true, she experiences a career ending injury which casts her adrift, struggling with the new shape of her life.

The Professor

Rob Chapin, a Professor of Chemistry, has been too focused on his career for a relationship to flourish. Then he meets Clare Eliason.

After Clare is injured, he asks her to marry him, which she does. But Clare can’t be a wife while still struggling with her losses. She pushes Rob out of her life, and desperate for a distraction, he agrees to accompany a colleague on a field trip to the Amazon.

THE SETTINGS

The novel’s settings: Boston, Peru, the Amazon, and Cape Cod were conjured from both experience and imagination.

Boston is where my husband and I lived after we finished graduate school, so using it as a setting was like visiting an old friend.

For the South American settings, I had my own impressions of Cuzco plus extensive help from a friend and colleague who had spent years in the Amazon studying plants.
